A-level results 2023: Employers less likely to require a degree As thousands of students receive their A-level results today (17 August), two new studies show a gap between what students think employers want in terms of qualifications, and the jobs that are being advertised. According to a survey by job site Indeed, three-quarters of school leavers believe that a university degree is essential to secure a good job. A separate survey by LinkedIn revealed a 90% increase in the share of UK job postings not requiring a degree, however. Danny Stacy , Senior Manager, Talent Intelligence at Indeed, said: “As hundreds of thousands of students receive their A-Level and BTEC results today, it’s clear from our research that a majority of them view university as the best path to a successful career. However, in the face of rising costs in society we also see signs that many students are also thinking twice about when, where and what they study as well as the value of a degree. While many jobs do and perhaps always will require a degree, we know many prosperous careers can be started straight out of school with starting salaries in entry level jobs being as high as £30,000 for some sales roles or £50,000 for those able to write software code. We’ve also seen a 30% rise in interest in apprenticeships over the past four years suggesting that despite record numbers of UCAS applications, young people are increasingly looking to begin their journey to better work through hands-on experience. So while university is right for many it’s by no means the best option for all and my advice for those receiving their results today is to consider their destination and plot the best route to getting there.”

Britain’s workers abused by the Tories and bosses – from racism to zero-hours contracts . the Trades Union Congress (TUC) found that the number of Black and Brown workers in insecure work more than doubled between 2011 and 2022 – from 360,200 to 836,340. Their chance of being in an insecure job has also increased. One in six Black and Brown workers are now in this position, versus one in eight in 2011. Overall, the TUC’s research found that the UK’s labour market was structurally racist. It noted that between 2011 and 2022: The proportion of Black and Brown people in insecure work increased from 12.2% to 17.8%. This is compared to the proportion of white people barely changing (10.5% to 10.8%). Black and Brown men were almost twice as likely as white men to be in insecure work (19.6% versus 11.7%). Black and Brown women were “much more likely” than white women to be in insecure work (15.7% versus 9.9%). 27% of the increase in Black and Brown employment was in insecure work. For white people, the increase was 16%. Black and Brown people made up two thirds of the overall growth in insecure work. This is despite them only making up 14% of the overall workforce.
Ukraine War: How is Poland’s Labour Market Changing? over 14 million Ukrainians crossed into Poland seeking refuge. While many of these displaced individuals eventually returned to their homeland, approximately 3 million Ukrainians have chosen to make Poland their new home. As of April 2023, according to data from the National Bank of Poland, around 65% of Ukrainian refugees have successfully secured employment. Also, an interesting shift has occurred, with Ukrainian refugees opening over 17,000 businesses in Poland during the first year of the conflict, significantly surpassing the 7,000 businesses established before the war The Polish government’s efforts to simplify and digitise residence and work permit procedures, initiated in the second half of 2022, will further enhance the attractiveness of the Polish labour market.

Overall it is still a flat market for Talent Intelligence roles with very few appearing, most notably is the cooling in the Indian market. I am seeing a greater spread across more broader People Analytics / HR Analytics, Talent Management Analytics and Location Strategy. This is probably a fair reflection of firms bunkering down and looking internally whilst the market is flatter more generally but also seeing talent intelligence impacting functions outside of traditional TI teams in Talent Acquisition.
